Iberia Plus Car Rental Partnership Changes

iberia plus logo 300 x 250British Airways Executive Club has had an exclusive relationship with Avis for several years. This means you couldn’t earn Avios with British Airways Executive Club for the other major car rental firms such as Hertz, Europcar, etc.

Luckily, Iberia Plus offered an alternative. Even better, you can earn roughly 300 Avios PER DAY with many car rental firms, unlike the flat earning rate offered by many other airline loyalty programmes. And Iberia Plus tended to offer frequent promotions from its various car rental partners…

However, Iberia Plus have announced a massive change to its car rental partnerships. Starting 1 November, 2014, you will no longer be able to earn Avios with rentals from Europcar, Hertz and Atesa! This basically means that Iberia Plus will, like British Airways Executive Club, have an exclusive arrangement with Avis. (assuming that the partnership with Sixt will disappear whenever that contract allows…)

In addition, Iberia Plus is changing the earning rate for Avis rentals. As of 1 November, 2014, you will earn 3 Avios per euro spent, with a minimum of 500 Avios for rentals of 1-2 days, and 700 Avios for 3+ days.

This is a substantial devaluation, as car rentals rarely cost more than 100 euros per day (the break-even point for earning 300 Avios per day). Even worse, this seems to be yet another example of Iberia Plus and British Airways Executive Club bringing their programmes in line – how long before the programmes are merged together?!?!

Bad news for those who rent cars frequently and liked to take advantage of the attractive earning rates from Iberia Plus…
