Earning Miles on Car Rentals

When renting cars, I never used to put much thought into earning miles for them. Invariably I would choose to earn Iberia Plus Avios as 300+ per day seemed a pretty good deal for an Avis rental. Perhaps there might be an occasional promotion that would catch my eye – such as the regular Club Carlson / Avis (or Budget) promotion offering 9,000 points per rental. But ultimately I would stick with Iberia Plus Avios.

Then things changed… Iberia Plus got rid of most of its car rental partners, and cut the earning rates substantially. Now I tend to look for the cheapest price, without worrying about earning miles. Except I now get annoyed earning 50 miles a day from some North American programme. I might be miles poor in those programmes and fancy topping up, but it’s still only 350 miles for a week’s rental!

So I finally got around to doing a chart, listing the major car rental agencies and the loyalty programmes in which one can earn miles or points. Most of the time there will be promotions floating around that you need to consider, but sometimes you just can’t be bothered… particularly since promotions often come with strings attached, such as booking specific rates/codes.

So hopefully this chart is a handy reference for deciding which car rental agency and mileage partner to choose…
