18,700 Avios for a 3-day car rental costing £50+

Iberia Plus and Avis have launched a promotion, but they don’t seem to be telling anybody about it! It is aimed at the Spanish market, where we have an upcoming “puente” or bank holiday weekend.

Avis is offering 18,000 bonus Avios if you book a Group C car (or better) for 3 days or more, starting on 8, 9 or 10 December. You will also earn at least 700 base Avios for the rental, making a total of 18,700 Avios.

A quick check at nearby Barcelona airport results in a cost of 65 euros for a 3-day rental of a Group C car. Check your most convenient location as well, but only in the UK, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Portugal, Switzerland, Belgium or Holland. Unquestionably this is a great deal if you can find a cheap rental, and well worth renting a car just to park it for the weekend or to run some errands you’ve been putting off.

You really need to be careful with the details, which you can find here. I’ve found Iberia Plus to be reasonably good with Avis promotions, but you don’t want to get caught out by something silly. Here are the highlights:

  • You must book on avisiberia.es or avis.es. Bookings on other websites or online travel agents such as Expedia do not qualify. Avisiberia.es actually is blocked by my anti-virus program for some reason, but avis.es works fine.
  • You cannot use any other coupon, promotion or frequent flyer points offer. Be safe – don’t try to use a cashback website, or the simple discount codes offered to members of Iberia Plus or British Airways Executive Club. The regular prices are likely to be cheap enough.
  • Only rent cars from the standard fleet. No moving vans, Prestige cars or those with a chauffeur. Group C is almost certainly going to be the cheapest that qualifies.
  • The bonus Avios can take up to 8 weeks to appear, so do yourself a favour and take a screenshot of the promotion, just in case you need to argue with Iberia Plus later…

I can’t find any restriction against renting the entire fleet of your local Avis location and earning 18,700 Avios for each, but if you keep it simple and only rent one car per Iberia Plus account (family members, etc.) you ought to be perfectly fine.

What happens if you return the car just minutes after pick it up?
    Would the points be credited?

I think it would go through the system as a 1-day or 1-hour rental and fail to qualify for the bonus Avios. I’ve never really heard of “mattress runs” for car rentals and I’m not sure Avis would be thrilled if you asked to park it on the lot somewhere, taking up space but not available for rental to another customer. (and that you didn’t want to return in 3 days for a formal return of the car)
