Iberia Plus – Groupon Offer Returns…

If your Spanish is any good – or your web browser can translate for you – you might be able to purchase some Avios at a decent price. The offer comes from the Spanish version of Groupon and the Avios are sent to an Iberia Plus account. You can access the offer here. This is now the fourth or fifth time this promotion has come around, so it seems to be reasonably appealing for all involved.

It is easy enough to sign up for a Spanish Groupon account – if not resident in Spain I’m sure you can enter any hotel address or similar… – and take advantage of the offer. Oddly, the price per Avios jumps around a bit:

  • 2,000 Avios for 24 euros (1.20 euro cents apiece)
  • 4,000 Avios for 59 euros (1.48 euro cents apiece)
  • 9,000 Avios for 119 euros (1.32 euro cents apiece)
  • 15,000 Avios for 189 euros (1.26 euro cents apiece)
  • 20,000 Avios for 249 euros (1.25 euro cents apiece)
  • 34,000 Avios for 429 euros (1.26 euro cents apiece)

Groupon members are limited to one purchase of the 2,000 Avios pack and 100,000 Avios overall. I cannot say for sure whether you could open several new Groupon accounts and send several 2,000 Avios packages to the same Iberia Plus account…

Thanks to the collapse in the euro/sterling exchange rate (although it recently has recovered a bit) the larger packages work out to around 1.1 UK pence apiece. And since the 2,000 Avios package has increased in price by 5 euros from earlier offers, I reckon that UK Avios collectors should be much less interested in this offer.

Should you manage to make a purchase, Groupon will e-mail you a voucher that is exchanged online for Avios. This voucher is also available in the “Mis Groupones” section available from a menu in the top right-hand corner of your Groupon screen once logged in.

It is also worth noting that Iberia Plus now has a shopping portal called IberiaPluStore. This can only be accessed on the Spain version of the Iberia Plus website. (just change the settings on the Iberia webpage) Groupon is listed on the IberiaPluStore offering 10 Avios per euro spent until 18 December, 2016. Around the time of the first Groupon offer the rate was 16 Avios per euro, and I eventually received those on top of the Avios sold by Groupon.

So, if you buy a 2,000 Avios package via the Iberia Plus store, you will earn an extra 240 Avios (10 times 24), making your total return 2,240 Avios for 24 euros. (1.07 euro cents apiece)

Another option is to sign up via my referral link for a Spanish cashback website called Beruby. You might need to use a VPN to pretend to be located in Spain. (otherwise you might be informed that Beruby isn’t available in your country of origin) But this Groupon offer should be considered “Escapadas / Viajes”, which would qualify for 7.5% cashback. Once the cashback clears, you should be able to withdraw via Paypal…
