I frequently write about Avianca LifeMiles when they sell miles at a huge discount. Quite often, it is a good deal to buy miles and spend them on Business Class or First Class flights. A number of devaluations, though, have made this less and less interesting for travel hackers. However, LifeMiles do not add fuel surcharges to any rewards, so that’s a major bonus.
Until 2 January, 2017, LifeMiles are also having a sale on reward flights on its Star Alliance partners. You can find details here. It seems to me that the sale is directed almost entirely at the eastern United States, as not all regions are involved.
The LifeMiles reward chart (available here) doesn’t normally break down into such precise regions, but for the purposes of this sale it does…
For Brits and other North Europeans, we would be looking at paying 105,000 miles in Business Class or 150,000 miles in First Class for a return ticket reward. If you bought miles at their cheapest – which I wrote about in November – you’d have paid 1.1p per mile. So, once taxes are included, you could be looking at little more than £1200 for Business Class or £1700 for First Class.
The normal price for Business Class is 63,000 miles each way. First Class usually costs 87,000 miles each way.
Except scratch that… this deal only works for rewards departing from the United States. It does work on a one-way basis however. So Europeans can only access the reduced pricing by splitting their reservation into two one-ways. Perhaps you could go to North America using Avios or Virgin Atlantic miles and return using LifeMiles??
