Some people find Hilton HHonors to be a bit confusing. HHonors’ intention is good. Their “Double Dip” policy has long meant that members could earn both hotel loyalty points and airline miles for the same hotel stay. However, HHonors then offers the option to trade those airline miles for more HHonors points, and that’s where things can get confusing, especially when they start offering bonus point promotions.
HHonors members earn 10 base points per dollar spent on hotel stays. Base points are really quite important to understand. If you reach elite status, your bonus will be a percentage of the base points earned. If HHonors offers a double or triple point promotion, only the BASE points will be multiplied. So far so good…
HHonors members must then choose between two options: “Points & Miles” and “Points & Points”. The choice can be made online through your HHonors preferences, and you can change back-and-forth as much as you like. If you choose Points & Miles, you must also choose an airline programme. Most airlines offer 1 mile per U.S. dollar spent. However, you can earn 1.5 mile per $ from Iberia Plus or 2 miles per $ from Virgin Atlantic Flying Club.
If you choose Points & Points, you will earn an additional 5 HHonors points per U.S. dollar but won’t receive any miles.
It is really important to note that you will never receive any kind of bonus – promotional, tier or any other kind of bonus – on those additional 5 HHonors points per U.S. dollar. However, many people believe that 5 HHonors points are more valuable than 1 mile (or 1.5 Avios or 2 Virgin miles). Therefore they choose “Points & Points” as their regular setting.
However, the logic changes when HHonors and a specific airline offer a promotion. So, oddly in my view, HHonors will NEVER apply promotional bonuses to the optional 5 points per dollar. But they WILL apply specific airline bonuses to Points & Miles. And when those airline promotions come around, it makes sense to change your preferences to Points & Miles (and register for the promotion).
One such promotion is now being offered by HHonors and AAdvantage. Between now and 27 March, 2017, members can earn:
- 500 miles PER NIGHT at Hilton, Curio, DoubleTree by Hilton™, Embassy Suites, and Hilton Grand Vacations properties
- 500 miles PER STAY at Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton, Home2 Suites, and Homewood Suites properties
Strangely, the promotion does not apply to Conrad or Waldorf Astoria hotels.
500 miles per night is unquestionably more valuable than 5 extra HHonors points, so make sure to register and change your HHonors account settings to Points & Miles with AAdvantage as your mileage partner.
