Spend 45,000 Miles on a Return Ticket to Thailand in Business Class

Turkish Airlines has launched a new route between Istanbul and Phuket, Thailand. To celebrate, Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles is offering a very interesting discount: 45,000 miles for a return reward in Business Class! You must book before 10 August, 2017.

Unfortunately, this promotion is less attractive than it might first appear:

  • You must fly between now and 31 October, 2017 – this is monsoon season in Phuket, so not an ideal time to visit
  • You can only fly on a return basis – you will be charged 45,000 miles for a one-way itinerary
  • Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles adds fuel surcharges to its rewards
  • The schedule for the Istanbul to Phuket route is less than ideal, as you can see below…

A flight arriving into Phuket at 4 a.m. is not pleasant for most, nor is a 5:30 a.m. departure back to Istanbul. But considering that the promotion covers low season in Phuket, M&S members could always fly to Phuket cheaply and then book the first morning flight to their final destination in the region: Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, etc. I wrote about “positioning flights” on InsideFlyer – here’s the link for details on how to lower the risk when flying on separate tickets.

Any chance Miles & Smiles have a great deal on buying miles at the moment ?!

Hilariously bad time to start flying to Phuket !! They’ll run fairly empty for a few months due to the weather.

No kidding, and those flights times – especially going out – will make it tough to connect from Europe. They could easily push it back 2-3 hours and have reasonable times without losing the connectivity on the way back to Europe.

Unfortunately M&S don’t really sell miles at a discount all that often. But I myself might need a top-up so will be looking out for a promo…
